Dear: Spider freaked

Those spiders have controlled you for as long as you can remember, no matter how small they are, it takes just a split second before your’e running away. It seems no matter how much effort you put into getting rid of it, nothing seems to help overcome the fear of spiders.

Doesn’t it annoy you when people say “there’s nothing to be scared about with spiders, they won’t hurt you“?

I know it frustrated me!

My name is Thomas Davis and for at least 30 years I was afraid of spiders, even the small ones. For a time I seemed to be strong with the little tiny ones but the big ones, no chance and for sure. Don’t get my mother and I alone cause I’m sure the house could have caught fire or something if a spider came in at the wrong time.

Once I got married, my wife took over the job of getting rid of the spiders and gave me a hard time everytime. She said a lot, ‘ how can a big guy like you be so scared of a little thing like that!”

It wasn’t until my son started catching spiders and asked me to help that I realized that I needed to conquer this fear once and for all!

I knew at this point that there had to be something I could do, I mean, I know there were a lot of people I knew that were as freaked as me with spiders, but I knew a lot more that had no problems touching them. I had to figure out how this could be and how I could become comfortable with these things so that I could empower my son not to be afraid of anything.

What I realized is that I had no clue as to why I was scared. I don’t remember any dramatic experience at all just that I was scared. Well this is what led me to the path of recovery. To be able to take control of this fear and not to jump as soon as I see a spider or leave the room. Now I have no challenges killing the small ones and the big ones, although it is sometimes harder the bigger they get!

The spider phobia is one of the most common phobias of all, although it’s one of the most ignored one of them all as it doesn’t hurt anyone, or so they say!

Saying this to someone that has a fear of spiders would not go over well. Most people will do one if not all of the following:

  • run screaming out of the room at first site and not return until absolutely sure that it is gone
  • jump up on furniture to make sure that the spider can’t get near
  • freeze until someone comes to the rescue and gets rid of if whatever way they shall
  • if desperate, find the longest biggest ‘thing’ and whack it until the ‘thing’ is broken

Most fear of spider sufferers don’t have a clue why they’re afraid, they just are, which makes curing it without understanding it, almost impossible!

What stands behind almost everyone how is dealing with a phobia of spiders is that they don’t know why they have it in the first place. Yes there are some people who can remember back to a emotional moment in which they were tramatised for life and have this fear but for most others, it just is.

What you need to do is understand why you have this phobia.

  • what really is a phobia
  • when does one get created
  • how does it get created
  • ultmately, what causes this phobia that you’re having?

Once you understand what your phobia is, you can then start working towards conquering the fear so the crawly things will bother you very little, if at all!


You may or not ever determine why this started but what you certainly need to do is understand why you’re having so that your brain can start working towards conquering it.

Phobics do realize that the fear is irrational but they also know that they cannot control it. The fear is persistant and has become part of every day life and unless a treatment is utilized to overtake the fear, it will persist.

Fear is not real, fear is just a perception but only if we could convince ourselves of that!

But we can!

Actually, when it comes to a phobia there are techniques that can be used in which to train ourselves to that. It is believed that the phobias develop from the body’s natural desire to protect itself. So if we can tell  our body’s that we’re not in harms way then it won’t react to protect us and then keep us from having this phobia.

This all sounds simple right, just tell our body’s were save and we’re done! Easier said than done but very very possible, I did it!

This all truly comes down to how severe your phobia is, it can be fixed if you want it to be but some will have an easier time doing so.

If you want to rid yourself of your spider fear, you can!

Stop running away from the spiders and start running to them, learn proven techniques to rid yourself of this phobia once and for all!

Even though I knew I wanted to get rid of my fear, I still didn’t know if I could, even when someone told me there were actually a few different ways to do so.  I was such a skeptic but even still, I wanted to at least try and low and behold, it worked!

  • a phobia is actully the body’s natural reaction, learn why it is so that you can start training your body otherwise

You can overcome your phobia of spiders!

You may need to utilize more than 1 of the techiques as there isn’t a ‘one solution fits all’, but your body will connect with at least 1 of them.

In order to overcome your fear of spiders you first need to establish what is cauing your fear, the root problem so you know what to focus your attention on

Tackling your fear can only be done by focusing directly on it, you can’t get through it if you’re trying to scirt around the issue.

  • Learn how to effectively establish for yourself that you have this fear, without doing so, anything else won’t work
  • Utilizing support from others will be a huge part of this, you don’t want to just utilize anyone’s support though so use the checklist in determing who to ask so that it doesn’t cause you more problems
  • Of course you want to eliminate the aspect of your problem getting any worse so utilize a technique that will keep it tamed to where your current attach is
  • Really understanding what your specific fear is will be the key to getting rid of it. Learn how to walk through your reactions so that you can pinpoint how it starts so you can stop it from happening.


Exposure therapy will help you in gradually becoming comfortable with your phobic situation!


This is actually one of the oldest and most well-known therapies to conquering fear. Now you can utilize a specific approach for dealing with this fear that you’re having!


you’ll be able to unlearn this phobia as it was something that you learned in the first place
learn how you can use this to relax so that your anxiety drops
these techniques are designed so that you go at our own pace, allowing you control over what your expierencing and ulitimately, your process of overcoming it

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy will walk you through what specifically frightens you and will then use facts and realiy techniques to help overcome them!

What you’ll do is work on your thinking patterns associated with what is frightening to you in regards to this situation.

you’ll learn how to alter your way of thinking as a result of knowing what it is now so that you can change your reaction
you’ll be able to work through your thoughts and feelings on a logical approach helping you then deal with the emotional side
Creating alternative scenarios for yourself will help in not having the same reaction so you’ll learn how to create ones that will benefit you specifically

A Panick Attack is not a sign of weakness, anyone can have one! Just knowing the facts of what a panic attack is can help someone overcome it!

What you really need to understand with this is that it’s not a mental illness but your mind is creating something for you in which it doesn’t really need to be. It’s important then when you’re looking at this problem with panic attacks that:

Now matter how long you’ve had it, you can control with using the right techniques
You can learn how to turn your mind around when you are having one
Utilize a 7 step process that will help you turn your mind around and stop the panick attack

Learn how to relax effectively using these relaxation techniques so that you can significanly reduce the timeframe it will take to calm yourself down when you experience a panick attack
